The Irish quartet have been increasingly gaining attention after opening for bands such as Inhaler and Mother Mother, and will soon support American hardcore band, Turnstile, at the 3Arena in Dublin. Gurriers are currently on a headline tour of their own where they kicked off in Glasgow for a wild night at The Art School.
Their debut album Come and See was released in 2024. The album details a range of topics such as emigration, the rise of the far right and desensitisation to violence. Sonically, it is a blend of raucous punk spirit with urgent vocals that mix spoken word and melodic moments that control the chaos.
Frankie Valli’s ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ played to the sold-out venue as the band made their way onto the stage. Immediately, the madness began when Gurriers opened with their newest single ‘Erasure’. The mosh-pits opened and the show was only just getting under way.
The liveliness continued for the entirety of the set as Gurriers played most of their songs from ‘Come and See’. Each song had a great reception from the audience, but their reaction to ‘Top of the Bill’ beginning was electric. Despite it being a slightly softer song compared to others, it was a clear fan favourite of the night right from its opening riff.
The closing tracks kept the same atmosphere that was felt from the start of the night, and at this point, everyone was running off of pure adrenaline. ‘Approachable’, ‘Des Goblin’ and ‘Nausea’ are three of their punchiest songs, so closing with these were perfect for rounding out a high-energy performance.
A takeaway from Gurriers’ live show was that everyone was living in the moment. Jumping around, picking each other up when someone fell down and just genuine love for the music. It’s not often you see this at gigs these days, which made the mood even better.
Gurriers are a band to keep your eyes on. Not only can they deliver at live shows, but their music is what the current music scene needs right now as they bring back post-punk vibes and are not afraid to speak out about what they believe in.
