It was a hot and humid night in Glasgow, but a crowd still shuffled in under the aircon to support some up-and-coming Glasgow-based talent.
Brennan first started his music journey down in East London, before moving up to Glasgow. Having already released two albums, he has returned with new material, forming the focus of last Tuesday night’s gig.
Opening up the night was Olivia Thom who delivered a charming acoustic set. She was followed by Aaron Miralles and his string band, whose indie-funk sound blended rich harmonies and a chilled groove to set the tone ahead of Brennan’s headline act.
It was then Brennan’s turn to take the stage alongside his band. The atmospheric opening of ‘Bite Down’ immediately set the vibe for his set. Brennan was accompanied by a brass band too, which added extra depth and energy to the performance.
‘Do You See’ was an early standout from the set. Along with ‘Bite Down’, this track was featured on BBC Scotland’s Introducing Programme, and it’s clear to see why. ‘Do You See’ is an infectious rock tune with relatable lyrics, making it one of Brennan’s strongest releases to date.
There were moments in the gig where the arrangement became more stripped back, allowing Brennan’s songwriting and vocals to take centre stage. However, when the full band kicked in, they were tight and cohesive with a full sound that elevated the performance.
The penultimate song, ‘Disco 2003’, was naturally the night’s focal point, with the single officially releasing that night. It’s a catchy indie anthem with heartfelt lyrics, and its memorable guitar riff stayed with me long after the gig finished.
Brennan and his band closed the set with ‘Talking To Someone’. Before launching into the song, he taught the audience the chorus, encouraging everyone to sing along. It was the perfect song to close out his engaging and energetic set—leaving me still singing the chorus on the way home.
If you get the chance to, get yourself along to one of Brennan’s gigs for a night of high-energy indie bangers.
